The MIJE are a non profit-making organisation which
manages three hotels for young people situated just a
stone's throw from one another in the Marais quarter in
the heart of Paris :
Fauconnier,
Maubuisson,
Fourcy.
All three are former aristocratic residences dating from
the 17th century and have been renovated by the MIJE.
The MIJE's self-service restaurant is located in the
splendid vaulted cellars of the Fourcy hotel.
Last but not least, the MIJE's travel department is
fully equipped to organise your activity programmes,
whether in Paris, provincial France, elsewhere in Europe
or other destinations. Our catalogue has almost 200
possible programmes and is renewed each year. Our
members will easily find the programme that's just right
for them, with the help of our fifteen-strong team of
advisers specialised in tailor-made trips.

A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY...
Early 1950's
:
Each year, a youth centre in a small urban housing
estate voluntarily organises a trip to Algeria for the
less well-off members of the community.
1958-1966
:
On the 30th of January 1958 the MIJE (les Maisons Internationales de la Jeunesse et des Etudiants) is born from this former initiative. The founders are Paul Anxionnaz, a former minister ; Marcel Auvert and Pierre Tessier, two teachers ; André Fontaine and Marc Marceau, two journalists and two other members, Jean Canou and Paul Martinet. Officially recognized by the National Education Ministry, the "baby" soon becomes an adolescent! A proposal for accommodation in Paris is developed. In 1966, the association has 9 staff on the payroll in rather cramped conditions.
1967-1977
:
The prefect of Paris suggests that the MIJE restore an insalubrious building, due to be demolished. The MIJE takes up the challenge. It is in this building that the MIJE set up their first "youth hotel", as well as the association's administration. Next comes the Maubuisson hostel. During this time the travel department starts to take off...
1977-1987
:
Everything comes in threes : the Fourcy hostel enters the MIJE family fold. After its renovation, a journalist specialised in youth activity programmes declares it "the most beautiful youth hostel in the world". Young people wishing to stay in the Marais now have 450 beds at their disposal.
1987...
The MIJE reaches adulthood : the three hostels are going strong and renovation work continues. At the same time, the MIJE renew and develop their activity programmes. Before 1987 the MIJE was not required to pay VAT, when this changes the MIJE pulls through thanks to their hard work and creative
spirit.
2006...
The head office of the MIJE moves to 13 boulevard
Beaumarchais 75004 Paris. |
